You have officially reached the halfway point of your DofE experience and hopefully you have had a fantastic first expedition. Now you have some experience under your belt it’s time to challenging yourself a little more. Not only will your days and trips be longer but perhaps you will want to try a new activity or a different aim, at Mountain Ash we can offer you lots of options.
The requirements for a Silver expedition are that participants complete a minimum of 1 training session, together with a practice and qualifying expedition. Each day must be filled with 7 hours of activity which includes time for working on your aim and breaks for lunch.
At Mountain Ash we have structured our programme to offer you the following;
- 1 training weekend (although more can be arranged) usually held over a Saturday and Sunday with no overnight component
- A practice expedition consisting of 2 1/2 days of activity and 2 nights camping
- A qualifying expedition with 3 days of activity and 2 nights of camping
Walking, Cycling and Kayaking
From training expeditions on the Purbeck Hills or Cranbourne Chase and qualifying expeditions in the New Forest we have immediate access to some fantastic silver expedition territory with opportunities to walk or cycle in solitude and to start to experience wild campsites.
A typical silver package consists of eight days of activity. Initially there will be two days of skills training. The first day will be spent learning navigation skills, first aid, camp craft and countryside awareness. The second day will be spent with an instructor practicing your chosen activity, applying those new skills and role playing emergency scenarios.
These two days will be followed by a practice expedition over three days and will require two nights of camping. Teams will work closely with an instructor on the first day but will move to more remote supervision on the second and third day.
There will then be a final, qualifying expedition. This will also take place over three days and the team will be remotely supervised by experienced instructors throughout. We are also able to provide qualified DofE award assessors.
If you prefer water based activities or just fancy trying something new then why not try taking part in a silver kayaking expedition. Poole Harbour provides a great setting for training and practice expeditions whilst the River Thames can be used for a qualifying expedition.
Just like the walking and cycling expeditions each package consists of eight days of activity consisting of 2 days of skills training, a 3 day practice expedition and a final qualifying expedition over 3 days. You will be accompanied by fully qualified instructors throughout your expedition.
Whatever your preference, from mode of travel to loactaion, we at Mountain Ash will make sure that your experience is memorable. Feel free to use the contact us form to discuss your requirements with us.
We look forward to helping you plan your journey.
