Welcome to the start of you Duke of Edinburgh experience. This is the beginning of a hugely rewarding journey that will teach you new skills and provide you with some truly memorable experiences.
The requirements for a Bronze expedition are that participants complete a minimum of 1 training session together with a practice and qualifying expedition. Each day must be filled with 6 hours of activity which includes time for working on your aim and breaks for lunch.
At Mountain Ash we have structured our programme to offer you the following;
- 1 training weekend (although more can be arranged) usually held over a Saturday and Sunday with no overnight component
- A practice expedition consisting of 2 days of activity and 1 night camping
- A qualifying expedition with 2 days of activity and 1 night of camping
Walking, Cycling and Kayaking
Being based near to the wonderful Purbeck Hills and Cranbourne Chase we have immediate access to some fantastic bronze walking and cycling expedition territory, with just the right balance of being safe to explore whilst still feeling quite remote. In addition to this, with Poole Harbour on our doorstep we also have access to probably the best bronze kayak location in the country. With options to camp on the harbour side or on the iconic Brownsea Island, a kayak expedition is a great way to undertake a bronze expedition. All of our teams journey on sit-on-top kayaks that carry loads well and feel safe.
A typical bronze package consists of six days of activity. Initially there will be two days of skills training. The first day will be spent learning first aid, camp craft and conservation awareness, with additional navigation skills classes. The second day will be spent with a suitably qualified instructor practcing the chosen activity, applying those new skills and role playing emergency scenarios.
These two days will be followed by a practice expedition that will run over two days and will require a night out camping. Teams will work closely with an instructor on the first day but will move to more remote supervision on the second day. Our staff will be on site camping with the groups.
There will then be a final, qualifying expedition. This will also take place over two days and the team will be remotely supervised by experienced instructors throughout. Our staff will be on site camping with the groups.
Whatever activity you choose rest assured that Mountain Ash Expeditions will stive to ensure that every trip is safe, fun and most importantly memorable. We are also able to tailor each package to suit your needs and are happy to base each session at locations convenient for you. Feel free to use the contact us form to discuss your requirements with us.
We look forward to helping you plan this first stage on your Duke of Edinburgh award journey.
